 French Children’s Songs

French as no other language offers a wide variety of songs and rhymes that are made into games. Therefore, learning to understand and speak French will be easy for your child as these games are fun to play! Here you can find lyrics to some French children’s songs about animals, people, weather as well as some nonsense songs that many foreigners find puzzling.

We can teach your child all of these French songs for children in our French children’s club in the centre of Moscow!

PROMENONS NOUS DANS LES BOIS WE ARE WALKING IN THE WOODS
Promenons-nous dans les bois We are wallking in the woods
Pendant que le loup n’y est pas. While there is no wolf.
Si le loup y était If there was a wolf,
Il nous mangerait It would eat us.
Mais comme il n’y est pas, But as it is not here,
Il nous mangera pas. It will not eat us.
Loup y es-tu ? Entends-tu ? Wolf, where are you? Do you hear?
Que fais-tu ? What are you doing?
Je mets ma chemise/chapeau/manteau I am putting on my shirt/hat/coat….
J’arrive…. I’m coming…..

UNE SOURIS VERTE GREEN MOUSE
Une souris verte qui courait dans l’herbe A green mouse is running in the grass.
Je l’attrape par la queue I catch it by the tail.
Je la montre à ces messieurs I show it to my masters.
Ces messieurs me disent My masters tell me:
Trempez-la dans l’huile “Dip it in oil.
Trempez-la dans l’eau Dip it in water.
Ca fera un escargot This way you will get a snail,
Tout chaud A hot snail”.

A LA PECHE AUX MOULES, MOULES, MOULES GOING TO PICK MUSSLES
A la pêche aux moules, moules, moules Going to pick mussels
Je n´veux plus y aller maman I don’t want to go there any more, mommy.
Les gens de la ville, ville, ville People in the town, town, town
M´ont pris mon panier maman Took my basket, mommy.
Les gens de la ville, ville, ville People in the town, town, town
M´ont pris mon panier maman Took my basket, mommy.

VIVE LE VENT GLORY TO THE WIND!
Vive le vent, vive le vent Glory to the wind, glory to the wind
Vive le vent d’hiver Glory to the wind of winter!
Qui s’en va sifflant, soufflant Which comes whistling and blowing
Dans les grands sapins verts! In the big green fir-trees!

PASSE, PASSE, PASSERA PASS, PASS, PASS
Passe, passe, passera Pass, pass, pass
La dernière, la dernière The last, the last
Passe, passe, passera, Pass, pass, pass
La dernière restera. The last is staying.
Qu’est-ce qu’elle a donc fait What has she done,
La petite hirondelle ? A little swallow?
Elle nous a volé She has stolen
Trois petits grains de blé. Three grains of wheat.
Nous la rattraperons We will catch her,
La petite hirondelle, The little thief,
Et nous lui donnerons And we will give her
Trois petits coups de bâton. Three blows with a stick.

AU CLAIR DE LA LUNE IN THE MOONLIGHT
Au clair de la lune, In the moonlight,
Mon ami Pierrot  My friend Pierrot,
Prête moi ta plume Lend me your feather
Pour écrire un mot To write a word.
Ma chandelle est morte My candle is dead
Je n’ai plus de feu I don’t have any more light.
Ouvre-moi ta porte Open me your door
Pour l’amour de Dieu ! For God’s sake!

AINSI FONT, FONT, FONT THEY DO IT THIS WAY
Ainsi font, font, font, They do it this way
Les petites marionnettes, Little puppets,
Ainsi font, font, font, They do it this way
Trois p’tits tours et puis s’en vont. Three little turns and they disappear.
Les mains aux côtés, Hands on hips,
Sautez, sautez, marionnettes, Hop, hop, puppets,
Les mains aux côtés, Hands on hips,
Marionnettes, recommencez. Puppets start over again.

Children’s songs in French videos with English translations are a great tool for parents whose knowledge of the French language is a bit rusty but who would still want their child to maintain and develop their French language skills. Our English translations of French songs for children help you understand the general meaning of each French children’s song we have, its main characters and events.

When we use French children’s songs in teaching French to little children in our French children’s club in Moscow we make sure that each French song for children is introduced with a set of motions or finger plays. English translations and videos of these French songs for children help you make up your own set of motions to go with each song.
